Spread Your Traffic Sources

One mistake I have seen time and time again is webmasters who work only for Google traffic and say heck with the rest. This can backfire in many different ways and will usually lead to the person only concerned with Google traffic to be stunned when their website completely flops when Google makes a small change within their algorithm. Now when I counsel clients on SEO practice and internet marketing techniques I ask them what they think the most important part of internet marketing is and the usual answer is getting to the top of Google. Even people with very little webmaster experience understand that harnessing the power of Google will provide excellent revenue for their online business. The problem is Google will cause a tunnel vision letting you forget about the millions on youtube, yahoo, bing, digg, and so many other great sites that if you were to spend time on would bring tremendous results.
This is from experience and is of course only opinion on what an internet marketer should be doing to protect themselves from the Big G’s ability to crush a site with a single change. When you begin marketing and SEOing remember that there is more out there than Google. You should be spending plenty of time figuring out both yahoo’s and bing’s algorithm and trying to get to the top of both. You may be asking why since Google carries 60% of the worlds search volume; well yahoo and bing still have millions of people who go and search them for websites and if you are not marketing to these search engines then expect to lose out on thousands in monthly traffic. Also if you are getting traffic from these other sources if Google decides to do a major change within their algorithm then your sales will not drop 100% they may still drop substantially, but you should be able to make some marketing adjustments and focus on increasing traffic from other sources.
Social media has stepped in as the main competition for search engines and traditional internet marketing. 200 million are on Facebook alone this is an audience which could easily make you a millionaire if you have the skill to not only reach this audience, but also figure out how to sale without being labeled a spammer. One tip I would like to give anyone trying to market in a social media world is be the one who people want to follow, be the one who creates the best content, and be the one who has the most knowledge in your niche. If you spend the time to learn everything possible about your niche when you recommend a product and people respect you as a leader you can expect to see that product being scooped up by the masses.
