What Do The Names Of Search Engines Mean?
Their fine-sounding names on everyone's lips, but not many users guess about the true meaning of these words. What is Google? Do I need to be afraid of Inktomi? Who and under what circumstances invented name Yandex - by Yandex and Rambler - by Rambler? We produced a small excursion into the history of the emergence and significance of the names of the major search engines.
Google
Google - a derivative from 'googol', the mathematical term for a unit with a hundred zeros. As Google notes, throughout the universe there is nothing of googol. Fortunately for the team of Google PR, it name replaced the previously used option 'Backrub' (something like 'grinding').
Lycos
Lycos named in honor of Likozid, Latin name for wolf spiders. Unlike most spiders, which passively wait for prey in the web, wolf spiders actively hunt their prey. (Adapted for the Russian version: the search engine is named after a dog-astronaut Lucky).
Yahoo!
Yahoo! Was launched as 'the key to the World Wide Web from Jerry' on behalf of the co-founder of service- Jerry Yang. The word Yahoo! – is an acronym that means 'Yet Another Hierarchical Officious Oracle', but Yang and the second co-founder David Filo, apparently after seeing the word in the dictionary, insisted on the next decoding of Yahoo! - 'rude, naive, uncouth. " Today, Yang and Filo call themselves A'Chief Yahoo'.
Aport!
Aport! was named in 1995, by Sergei Korolev, he was the CEO of 'Agama', where he developed a search engine. Name does not need any decoding. However, over time, the former cute puppy, quickly lifting his stick, was replaced by more abstract symbols, but the name survived.
Rambler
Rambler is an example of borrowing of the words from another language. English-Russian dictionary gives the translation 'runabout, a tramp'. There is another meaning - 'curly rose; creeper'.
Yandex
Yandex is the original hybrid, either in Russian or in English it denotes nothing. Elena Kolmanovskaya, editor of Yandex, explains that ' the word' Yandex was invented by 'father- founder of our search, now technical director of' Yandex ', Ilya Segalovich. 'Yandex' means 'language-index', or if in English, 'Yandex' - 'Yet Another indexer'. During the years of public existence Yandex has some other interpretations. For example, if in the word 'Index' we will translate from English the first letter ('I' - 'Я'), we will get Russian 'Яndex'.
Another interpretation is suggested by Arkady Volozh, general director of the company:
'This title (' Yandex '-' Yet Another Indexer ') came up with Ilya Segalovich (main developer of 'Yandex ') by analogy with the products of Unix (eg, YACC - Yet Another C Compiler). And I liked the Russian transcription. 'Яndex' means 'linguistic code': the letter 'Я' – is a Russian letter. It is indexing with Russian specifics. Researches on this subject are continuing. "
