Seven Ways To Show Your Genuine Self Online
Genuine people are sought after both offline and online because of the way they treat others. Someone who is genuine can have the loftiest of titles or no title at all. A genuine person is someone who is truly interested in others; someone who listens and hears what others have to say. Genuine people are comfortable with themselves, can laugh at themselves, are open, approachable and accepting of others. Genuine people are the people you want to have relationships with and do business with because you know them, you like them and you trust them.
How does being genuine translate to the online world of social media marketing? Quite easily because all a person needs to do is be true to who they are.
1. Be Natural. Keep your style as relaxed as if you were talking with a good friend over a meal. Before you begin posting, write out your thoughts and, if you sound too formal, stuffy or authoritative, re-write it until it sounds like a “regular” conversation.
2. Be Open and Approachable. In your posts/messages be open and inclusive. Expand your circle; invite others to connect with you and make sure you connect in return. Also, look for posts from new friends and followers then comment on them.
3. Be Helpful. If you can answer a question, do; if you can't, don't post just to post. Give of yourself. Share resources, tips and insights. Connect friends/business associates with others of like minds.
4. Be Appreciative. Make sure you show appreciation for what others are doing, saying or have accomplished. Give credit where credit is due. Give thanks to people who have helped you, recognized you or done anything for you. Display your attitude of gratitude.
5. Be Sincere; Be Honest; Be a Straight Shooter. If someone asks your opinion, tell them the truth rather than what you think they want to hear. Be sincere when you compliment someone rather than “buttering them up” for some future benefit. Say what you mean; mean what you say.
6. Be Comfortable with Yourself/Make Others Feel Comfortable. Again, be who you are. Don't pretend that you are something you are not or that you have knowledge you do not. The world of social media marketing is very fast, very transparent and it is just a matter of time before your “secret” is discovered anyway. If you mess up or make a mistake, admit it; don't look to blame someone else. Be willing to laugh at yourself. Welcome others into your circle and let them see who you are—warts and all.
7. Follow the Advice of Dr. Seuss. "Be who you are and say what you feel, because those who mind don't matter and those who matter don't mind."
